Money’s Too Tight For Steak

Following on from my post about poutine, I wanted to give praise to the place I had dinner on Friday night in Montreal. Vieux-Port Steakhouse in the city’s old town neighborhood is somewhere I could highly recommend for meat-eaters. Vegetarians, you’re out of luck.

As you might guess from the name, the restaurant is heavy on the meat dishes ranging from beef to lamb and some seafood options. My friend Brent and I decided we were going to treat ourselves to an upscale meal (to clash with the fact I’m decidedly not upscale), and so we ignored the hefty price tags on the menu and took our seats inside the cozy venue.

Brent chose the “striploin” New York steak with pan-seared scallops, served with roasted peppers. He gave high praise to the meal, though I didn’t try any of his food.

That’s because I had more than enough on my plate. I went for the two tenderloin medallions wrapped in bacon, served with a shiitake mushroom sauce. I don’t typically like mushrooms but this sauce was outstanding and tasted more like a rich wine-based sauce than strongly of mushrooms.

As I mentioned above, the prices at Vieux-Port are on the high side, but that’s excusable when the food is this good.
