A Weekend In Arizona

The weather’s getting cold in DC, so I was thankful for the chance to escape to Arizona last week for the wedding of my friends Adam and Stephanie.

Seeing them tie the knot in Tucson was tremendous. The hangover from too much sangria at the wedding was not as great. And I have no recollection of the apparent 10-minute conversation I had with the congressman who was sitting across from me at dinner.

Oh well!

What I can recall are two places that Adam and I went for breakfast while we were out West. So as a stalling tactic while I procrastinate over writing up the next dinner interview, here’s a quick review of both those restaurants.

THE GARLAND BISTRO
119 East Speedway Boulevard

A somewhat odd menu on offer at this tiny restaurant. The Garland Bistro serves up what Adam said was traditional Southwestern breakfast dishes, alongside a host of Asian options. It was a bit baffling, but then I’m pretty simple. Regardless, on my friend’s recommendation I went for the “roadrunner,” a mound of food including two eggs with corn tortillas, beans, salsa, cheddar cheese and breakfast potatoes. It was a lot of food. It wasn’t the prettiest dish (mostly red and yellow lumps) and sadly it also lacked a fair amount in the flavor department. On the bright side, it was a pretty filling meal.

THE BLUE WILLOW
2616 North Campbell Avenue

A much better breakfast at The Blue Willow. My post-wedding hangover (self-induced, once again) was kicked out of my system by the hearty and delicious meal at this relaxed restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating. I had standard fare of turkey sausage, eggs, potatoes and toast and it was simply well done. Not exaggerating when I say everything was perfectly cooked, and the portion was so large it kept me sated for the rest of the day. Tremendous, and well worth a visit if you find yourself in Tucson.
