Proud Strangers

The events in Orlando have touched me deeply. In the eight years that I’ve been doing this website, I’ve met many people (90 as of today), and several of them are gay.

I’m proud to have met them all.

Last week’s tragedy makes it more important than ever that the voices of the LGBT community are heard. So a Thursday throwback today, I want to highlight some positive stories from a few of the gay people that I have interviewed. They are actors, photographers, doctors, writers, business owners, and more. All have faced adversity at some point, but are proud of where they are today.

Actor Cecil Baldwin (10th stranger)

Photographer Lars Stephan (11th stranger)

Writer Winston Gieseke (23rd stranger)

Writer Kyle Michel Sullivan (26th stranger)

Adult entertainer Antonio Biaggi (45th stranger)

Former DC ANC candidate Matt Abbruzzese (53rd stranger)

Actor Jeffrey Johnson (54th stranger)

Realtor/actor Matt Bauman (61st stranger)

Doctor Brobson Lutz (67th stranger)

Gay bar owner Doug Schantz (87th stranger)

Doug, the owner of Nellie’s in DC, summed it up well when I asked him why it’s important to have gay bars that are also welcoming to straight people. He said that they provide spaces where gay people can feel safe, and where everyone is invited.
“I grew up in a very white middle-to-upper middle class environment and didn’t have a lot of diverse friends,” he said. “Owning Nellie’s has opened my eyes completely to how many different people live on this planet, and DC is a great example of that diversity.”
