Here’s the 38th Throwback Thursday article; the time I got coffee and cupcakes with Ed Koch.
I met Ed in October 2011 on a trip to New York, the city where he served as mayor for three terms in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2011 he was a partner at the law firm Bryan Cave, advising on regulatory issues. Ed only had 45 minutes to spare, hence eating and sipping in his office instead of venturing out to a restaurant. And it was a fairly formal, professional interview, the kind I’m used to in my day job covering federal policy, rather than a more personal dinner interview. Nevertheless, I was glad to have met him, and he gave some interesting quotes.
Ed died in February 2013, a few months after the film documentary Koch about his life opened in cinemas. If you have an interest in New York politics, it’s worth a watch on iTunes or buying it from Amazon.
