For the 58th Throwback Thursday, here’s my two-part interview with lifelong New Orleans resident Mary Burns. Over a long lunch at the fantastic Deanie’s Seafood in May 2014 she shared her colorful life story.
Part one of the interview dealt with growing up in the Crescent City and her teaching career. In the second part she talks candidly about Hurricane Katrina, her husband’s death, and how discovering zydeco dancing helped her find new joy in life.
Mary and I are still in touch, and I try to see her on trips down to her beloved city, usually on the dance floor.
Also, part two includes video of me trying my first ever oyster. It didn’t go as well as Mary hoped.
