Rest In Peace Matt Yee

Far too late in posting this sad news but I still wanted to pay tribute to the memory of singer and performer Matt Yee.

Matt, the 96th stranger featured on this site, was diagnosed with liver cancer at the start of last year and unfortunately passed in December in his native Hawaii. Outgoing, friendly, musically gifted and always upbeat, being in his presence immediately lifted your spirits.

There’s a nice tribute article in The Bay Area Reporter which details Matt’s decades of performing not only on land but also on cruise ships around the world. And it’s on a cruise where I first experienced the hilarious, non-stop energy of Matt’s “Outrageous Adult Sing Along Diva Show,” in which he donned all manner of costumes (including drag) while singing songs both original and from others, telling stories, making jokes, and generally trying to get everyone to have a good time. He was able to make people laugh, cry, and do ridiculous things they never would have considered.

During a seven-day cruise to Mexico in January 2017, I was lucky enough to interview Matt over dinner. Over several hours, he told me about how he reinvented his life, leaving a career in law behind to pursue his dream of entertaining.
