Interview 91: Arts & Advocacy

JR “Nexus” Russ is living up to his name.

Christened Nexus on his first trip to the Burning Man festival, JR — an artist in Washington, DC — finds his professional and personal life increasingly at a nexus. He’s heavily involved in the city’s arts scene, but equally passionate about his day job as a youth advocate.

During an early evening meal in Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, JR told me about his experiences growing up in the District and what it is he loves about the arts.

As a bonus, he also took me to rehearsal later that night for Synetic Theater’s all-dancing performance of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” where I got see him in action.

But as I learned that evening, his love for arts is as equal as his investment in his day job as the communications and development manager at the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates
