Bee Lady Day Honors Jean Bishop’s Life

The first Bee Lady Day took place in Hull, East Yorkshire, last week to honor the life of fundraiser Jean Bishop.

Jean, featured as the 69th dinner stranger in December 2014, was renowned in the region for her work. For decades, she’d dress in an eye-catching bumblebee costume to raise thousands of pounds for Age UK, a charity for the elderly that was close to her heart. She died in 2021, raising almost £125,000 for the charity during her lifetime.

Age UK this year launched Bee Lady Day in her memory and with the goal of raising £100,000. Taking place on May 13, the charity said the event encouraged people to take part “whether through dressing up, hosting bake sales, or participating in sponsored events, we want the region to come alive with the buzz of Bee Lady Day, all in support of local older people.”

If you’d like to donate to Age UK in honor of Jean, their donation page is here.
