Interview 136: Dinner With Artist Doudgy ‘Dew’ Charmant Talking Painting And More

The 136th dinner interview is my meal with Doudgy “Dew” Charmant, a well-known Washington, D.C., artist.

Painting in vibrant, warm colors with acrylics and oils, his works often focus on human expressions with startling depth — drawing the viewer in and keeping them engaged. His creations tell stories that can shift with each new look.

His deft touch has led to a diverse and ever-growing roster of regular collectors, as well as major collaborations with parts of D.C. life. Most recently, he worked with the Giant supermarket chain to design an eye-catching reusable tote bag as part of their initiative to reduce plastic usage. That follows an earlier project where he painted a mural on the side of a Giant location in the city.

Over the years, Doudgy has also earned awards and widespread recognition for his creative output. Highlights include an art residency at the Pentagon and a feature in a Capital Emmy award-winning short documentary titled “Black Artist Living in Montgomery County: Doudgy Charmant.”
