Interview 143: Christine Hamilton Talks Scandal, Reinvention And Being Happily Retired

“Battleaxe,” “wife from hell,” “Lady Macbeth” – Christine Hamilton has heard every insult.

She gained notoriety during the 1990s cash-for-questions scandal that ended her husband Neil’s political career, bankrupted them, and seemingly defined their lives forever. Nearly 30 years later, journalists still can’t write about the couple without re-litigating the past.

But Christine worked hard to turn scandal into a kind of second life, embracing reality TV success, panto, writing and being “a happily retired old bag.”

In the 143rd dinner interview, she talks candidly about reinvention, the obituaries that will likely never escape the scandal, and why she’s grateful to be out of the mainstream at last.
