Growing up in England, one tradition was going to pantomimes, or pantos, around Christmas. These shows take fairy tales and similar stories, throw in a hundred and one puns and jokes even my dad would be embarrassed to tell and all with deliberately over-the-top acting and outfits. And a recent dinner stranger is performing in one this year.
Naomi Paxton will be appearing as her magical cabaret performer alter ego Ada Campe in “Growled,” which continues the story of “Beauty and the Beast.” It’s taking place in London at the famous cabaret and performance venue Royal Vauxhall Tavern on select dates from November 25 to January 3.
Here’s a description of the show from the event’s website: “‘Growled’ is the hilarious tale of life for Belle and her Prince once the classic story ends and they face the reality of ‘happy ever after’. This magical story is brought to life by a stunning cast, packed with hit songs and more jokes (and clocks) per minute than any other panto. Don’t miss out.”
I met Naomi in January for the 132nd meal with a stranger. Over brunch, Naomi shared how Ada’s huge, colorful hats are among many different hats she wears, as she’s also an academic researcher with a keen interest in the suffragettes, has traveled the world acting and teaching, and much more.
