Revolution Studios, the software company co-founded by 127th dinner interviewee Charles Cecil, is getting plaudits for the recently released Broken Sword: Reforged — an update to a landmark adventure game first released in 1996.
The new version features remastered graphics, improved audio, reworked scenes and more to provide a fresh take on a classic game. The opening lines and scene, outside a Parisian cafe, are still as vivid in my mind as the day I first played Broken Sword, as I’m sure they are for many people that played it during the original release. So, it’s wonderful to take a trip down memory lane and play it all over again, and reviews for the update are overwhelmingly positive.
Charles was one of the last few interviews in 2020 before the pandemic and social distancing started. We met in York, England, where Revolution Studios is based. They specialize in adventure games, including the globally popular Broken Sword series and Beneath a Steel Sky, among other titles. Over a lengthy and incredibly enjoyable lunch, Charles shared how he first got into the computer games industry and its many ups and downs over several decades.
For the latest edition of Broken Sword, Charles has been doing a number of interviews where he discusses the game’s history and much more, and you can find links to these by following him on Twitter (or X, I guess).
